Statement Against The Listing of Castist And Communal Mother Tongue on CSAS Portal by DU Administration!

Recently, CSAS portal of Delhi University has listed Majdoori, Mochi, Chamari as ‘mother tongues’ and replaced Urdu with Muslim. This casteist as well as communal act by Delhi University is just another manifestation of the ongoing fascist penetration in educational institutions. Communalization of University campuses and shrinkage of democratic space has been a perpetual phenomenon under the fascist Modi government which is trying to kill rationality and scientific temperament of common student population and make them part of their blood-thirsty riotous mob driven by communal frenzy.

Imposition of Hindi over other schedule languages and repression of Urdu is just another tactic used by the BJP-RSS Sangh-Parivar to establish their fascist hegemony, and on top of that, this act is also a name display of their casteism. Replacing Urdu with ‘Muslim’ shows how they are trying to create communal polarization and associate and Indian indigenous language with the common enemy they want to create in the form of Muslims.

It must be noted that Urdu is a language that originated in this sub-continent only and it is a living example of our shared culture. This is the history that these fascists are scared of and that is why they are trying their best to distort it. Onslaught on Urdu is not restricted to some isolated incidents but actually a part of broader fascist framework that tries to establish Urdu as a language of a particular religion. Fascist leader Yogi Adityanath also spewed venom against Urdu associating it to muslim clerics while using Urdu words himself. Recently Rajasthan BJP minister issued a directive to the state police department asking to replace Urdu and Persian words with Hindi. Hindutva Fascists are systematically attacking Urdu in order to strengthen a purely ideological community which they construct against the false enemy figure that is often the muslims however this fascist figure enlarges and encompasses Christians, Communists and everybody that opposes these fascists.

Not only the this, form also included caste-based occupations such as Chamar, Kurmi etc. in the language section. It reveals the deep rooted casteism entrenched in the minds of fascist administration and no amount of apology or nonsensical excuse can cover this fact. Words such as Chamar are derogatory casteist slurs thrown against Dalits and other people to demean them. It further unmasks the anti Dalit, anti toiling people face of the fascists which they want to hide under the banner of “Hindu unity.” Nobody should fall for this trap as it is clear that Hindu Rashtra, a purely ideological imagined community that they often cry about is only for the upper caste corporate male population. These fascists use religion, language and caste to divide the common masses of India and make the ruling class richer through the plunder of toiling people.

Disha Students’ Organization firmly stands against the casteist and communal Sangh-Parivar trying to communalise our university campuses and we also demand immediate rectification in the CSAS portal. Even if the fascist admin apologizes stating technical glitch or some other excuses, their intentions are pretty clear and we must not fall for their fascist tactics. We appeal all students and justice loving youth to stand against the fascist onslaught and unite on our real issues such as education, employment, healthcare and struggle for the India Bhagat Singh and other revolutionaries martyred for.
